Diabetic Foot Care

People with diabetes can become vulnerable to infections and sensory neuropathy.  Diabetes can also affect the quality of blood flow and impact on the bodies natural ability to heal. This is why it is important to look after your feet and to have regular checks and look after the health of your feet.

Routine Treatments

Routine Nail Cutting

It is important to look after your feet and toenails. Regular routine nail cutting and filing will improve comfort, mobility, prevent disorders and problematic nails occurring. Not looking after or being unable to care for your feet and leaving nails uncut can lead to balance problems. Foot wear can become ill-fitting leading to a high risk of falls.

Callus and Corns

Callus and corns are caused by friction from ill-fitting footwear or repeated pressures on the foot through gait. Callus, a build up of yellow tough skin is commonly found on the heel and balls of the feet. Corns can develop on soles of the feet and on apex and top of the joints of the toes. Pointed, cone shaped and inverted, they can cause great pain and discomfort.

Dry Cracked Heels

Dry and cracked heels are generally caused by lack of moisture in the skin, this is called Anhidrosis. This causes callus and seed corns to develop. Painful deep fissures can occur in the callus around the heels and act as a portal for infection if not treated and maintained.

Problem Toe Nails

Common Nail problem include Onychauxis nails when the nail becomes thickened and yellow. Involuted nails that curl round back into nail folds and can become problematic. Psoriatic nails can be common among people with Psoriasis which causes discoloration and pitting of the nail. Problem nails can all be maintained with regular treatment.

An ingrown toenail develops when the sides of the toenail grow and pierce into the surrounding skin

Ingrown Toe Nail

An ingrown toenail develops when the sides of the toenail grow  and pierce into the surrounding skin. The big toe is often affected and as nail curls and pierces the skin it then becomes red, swollen and tender. There can be pain if pressure is placed on the toe from tight fitting socks or shoes. This causes inflammation of the skin at the end of the toe. A build-up of fluid causes swelling (oedema) in the area surrounding the toe and in some cases an overgrowth of skin around the affected toe .

Fungal and Verruca Infections

Initial treatments £30 with follow-up appointments from £15. Stockist of Lamisil and Emtrix products

Verrucas

Verrucas or also known as plantar warts can occur anywhere on the soles and toes, often found on weight-bearing areas of the foot. They are caused by the HPV (Human papillomavirus). The virus enters your body through tiny cuts, breaks or other weak spots on the bottom of your feet. People with weakened immune systems can be prone to verrucas. They vary in size from just a few mm. to more than one cm. A rough cauliflower appearance with black dots which are blocked blood vessels are present.

Athletes Foot

Athletes foot is a fungal infection (also known as Tinea Pedis) the infection causes dry, red, flaking, itchy and irritated skin. Commonly found between the toes and on soles of the feet. Hands and fingernails can also be affected due to scratching and transference of the fungal infection.

Fungal Nail Infection

Many people develop a fungal nail infection also known as onychomycosis at some point in their life. It's not usually serious, but can be unpleasant and difficult to treat. The infection develops slowly and causes the nail to become discoloured, thickened and distorted. There can be pain and discomfort and the toenails become brittle and crumbly. The skin around the nail may also become infected and be itchy and cracked or red and swollen.
